The Story Behind This Song

I wrote this song the year my brother died — while his ashes sat on my studio desk. I stared at that box every single day, and it changed me forever.

My brother wasn't "crazy." He wasn't "the problem." He was a human being in pain — and the world slapped labels on him instead of offering help. People gaslit him, dismissed him, mocked him, silenced him. And when he finally broke, they blamed HIM for the pain they helped cause.

That's why I wrote this song.

Mental health matters. Empathy matters. And for the love of God — stop gaslighting people and calling them crazy for the pain you caused.

This song is for every person who was misunderstood, mislabeled, and emotionally abandoned. It's for the ones who were hurting and got told to "get over it." It's for the ones who were silenced until the silence swallowed them.

I sing now because he never got to. And I will never let another person shame me, mute me, or call me "crazy" for telling the truth.

Lyrics

Three weeks gone 'fore they found your name
Door locked tight still the TV played
Ashes now in a box on a shelf in my room
It's all that's left 'cause no one came
No brothers no friends no last goodbye
Just me and the dust and the question why
Who holds you up when your soul can't stand
When the weight is too much who will understand
Who lifts you up when you're sinking down
Who comes for you when there's no one around
When you're breaking to the bone
And your heart's too tired to care
This is shame and the world's not there

Mislabeled misunderstood rejected erased blocked
Children taken no crime no talk
Too much pain for one man to hold
A wound that never closed

Who holds you up when your soul can't stand
When the weight is too much who will understand
Who lifts you up when you're sinking down
Who comes for you when there's no one around
When you're breaking to the bone
And your heart's too tired to care
This is shame and the world's not there

He cried every day pounded walls 'til they bled
Drowned in the bottle locked in his head
Shadows for company silence for friends
When the hurt never stops you just want it to end

Any man would break from a pain that great
No claim on his body no goodbye at the gate
No tear no prayer no mercy to see
They were not brothers just stone where hearts should be
They watched him sink never reached for his hand
Turned away as his life slipped through the sand

Who holds you up when your soul can't stand
When the pain's too much who will understand
Who takes your hand when the night turns cold
When your world comes crashing who's there to hold
This is shame and the world never cared

Not a monster not insane
Just a man shut out 'til nothing remained
This is shame but you're not forgotten
I will always honor I will always speak your name
